THOUGHTS FROM MY SHED... becoming more bendy or Yoga

In the pursuit of mindfulness I thought I would try a bit of yoga. I have no intention of covering myself in an armful of bangles and strings, start humming all over the place or even wearing tie dye baggy trousers but I do believe that I should give it a go. It is something that I secretly envy when I see women heading off with their yoga mats, so here goes. I might have to invest in some nifty yoga pants!!
After doing some in depth research into it, I would like to share my limited knowledge as a would be yoga convert. The pose above is called 'The corpse'. Looks like a good start to me, but my understanding is this is not as easy as it looks.
Looks like my daughter found it quite easy on holiday. She could even sunbathe at the same time. However, I have found it increasingly interesting the more I looked into it.
Yoga is an ancient practice with origins stretching back thousands of years in India, but many people have stripped away the spirituality and focus of yoga and many of us imagine that very toned and athletic people are sticking their legs behind their heads and walking across the floor effortlessly on their hands.
Yup, this is me and with my white spanxed husband practicing on a remote beach. Yeh, right. Firstly I don't think my husband would be brave enough to try and lift me and secondly he definitely would not be seen wearing white leggings (or any!).
Saying that I am going to point out the great benefits that Yoga appears to give you.
1. It's a great workout: I like the idea that you can adapt the practices to your own speed and level of comfort. For me this will be from ground zero but I'm willing to look a fool to feel better.
2. It can help your breathing technique: Yoga helps you open your lungs and the excericses encourage you to focus and center your breathing. As we know when under massive stress, the best thing you can do is to breath deeply, so I am sure it can prove to be a method of effective stress management.
3. Sleep! Now this is a great one for those of you who don't sleep well. If you do a few sequences of poses and movements before you go to bed it can help you go to sleep more quickly. Lets see how that one goes. I have read many times that people fall asleep in yoga classes and I'm not saying it's through boredom but through relaxation.
4. Improving your posture: No not by hanging you upside down on a rope (I'm not sure I'm ready for that type of Yoga, but by being taught to sit with proper posture while doing these exercises can only be a good habit to adopt. So there will be no slouching from now on!
5. Meditation: I am swiftly coming round to the idea that meditation is not humming, hitting a metal bowl with a spoon, in a fog filled room of incense but that it truly improves your life by letting your mind have time to process all the crap that happens during the day. It calms and soothes. Call it mindfulness, meditation, quiet time, relaxing, it is something that we should have a go at.
So here I go on my next challenge in mindfulness..
I'm hoping to be able to do some of these soon (however I'm loving the look of number 6). While doing my research I also noticed some of our cats have already joined in my quest for mindfulness and I thought I would share a few poses that they have achieved already...
